Manchester City players visit local fans to surprise them and thank them for their support! #nothingwithoutyou

PRESS RELEASE

• Manchester City’s first team surprised a number of unsuspecting city fans across the city as the 2016-17 season came to a close

• First team players each made one of twelve visits to committed City fans around Manchester

• Private homes visited included to three generations of the same family, an avid knitter, City’s most senior Cityzens and its newest baby fan

• Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva, Nolito and Angus Gunn turned up unexpectedly at Divine Mercy Primary School to deliver a PE lesson

• Brazilian trio Gabriel Jesus, Fernandinho, and Fernando brought beach football to the city centre, playing with fans, as the morning’s rush-hour came to a close.

Manchester City players have marked the end of the season by surprising an army of local fans throughout the city to thank them for their loyal support.

With all first team players involved, the homes, workplaces and schools in and around Manchester city centre were visited, with one mission in mind – to express their sincere thanks to the fans for their unwavering support and that the club is nothing without them.

And, in a public appearance aimed at fans working in the town centre, City’s Brazilian trio of Gabriel Jesus, Fernandinho and Fernando, brought a touch of Copacabana to Manchester with a kick about on a specially constructed beach outside the National Football Museum in the heart of the city.

Eleven private visits were made in total with players hand delivering personalised thank you cards and other gifts. The players also spent time listening to fan stories and reminiscing about their favourite City moment.

At 101 years old, Vera Cohen is one of Manchester City’s most senior Cityzens and season ticket holder. Famed for her baking skills and raising money for charity, Vera was visited by captain Kompany who popped over to her house for a brew and a slice of cake, along with sister Olga, who is also a season ticket holder and a mere 96 years old.

Yaya Toure gave unsuspecting Shirley Leonard the shock of her life as he delivered a card, a balloon and a cake for her 50th birthday while Raheem Sterling and Tosin Adarabioyo were given a masterclass in knitting as they visited lifelong blue and avid knitter Julie Dolan.

Talking of the visits, Vincent Kompany said:

“Our fans have been through thick and thin with us. Their support and loyalty has carried us over the line when we’ve needed it the most. We are nothing without our fans and today we wanted to show our local fans how deep our appreciation goes.

“We’ve been to see Vera and Olga, two wonderful young women who have been supporting the Club for a very long time. Vera has been supporting City since the 1930s so that just shows how much history and passion there is for the Club and why people have supported us for so long. It was very inspiring and I’m glad I could come over and meet them in person.”
Echoing these thoughts, Yaya Toure said:

“It’s been a privilege to come here [and meet Shirley]. Hearing her stories, seeing her passion and how much City is a part of her life – the real emotion - there is nothing like it. It was a special moment for me. Fans like Shirley make this Club special and all of us at the Club need to remember that.”

Under the guise that City’s TV cameras would be turning up to do a feature on her knitting skills, Julie Dolan was given the surprise of her life and said:
“It’s been absolutely brilliant. I only expected CityTV to turn up – not the players! If I’d have known, I’d have made them something!
“They stayed for a cup of tea and tried on some of the hats and they even had a go at crocheting! Raheem was a bit better than Tosin admittedly but they both did alright!
“It was such a surprise. I can’t wait to tell all of my friends and family. My grandson will be over the moon! It’s been such a brilliant day. They can come around anytime!”
“When they retire, I’ll happily give them some more lessons!”
Raheem and Tosin each took home one of Julie’s special City knitted hats and spent the afternoon walking around City Football Academy wearing their new gifts.
